The exhibition " TransMünchen" portrays the history and present of the lives of Munich citizens who do not identify with the traditional male-female paradigm.

Up until the 1980s, a self-determined trans* life was virtually impossible. A few courageous, flamboyant pioneers moulded the image. During the Nazi era, coming out would have implied mental institution, concentration camp and possibly death; later still, forced psychiatric treatment, existential threats, sterilisation, seizing of children. The sexual preference serving as a great unifying denominator for the gay community was missing for the trans* community. In the past, they had to maintain their contacts in secret. Thus the existence of a trans* self-image as well as the delicate blossoming of a trans* community is relatively new.

"TransMünchen" takes a look at the history of the Munich trans* community, from the "dark" period at the beginning of the 20th century to the first protection laws for trans* people, new medical findings to the foundation of the first self-help groups and associations and beyond.

Trans* is not a sexual identity. Trans* are just as straight, bi, queer, gay, asexual or anywhere in between as the rest of humanity.

The exhibition "TransMunich" was conceived and coordinated by the Forum Queer Archive and is part of "TransVision". In addition to "TransMünchen", this series of events at the Amerikahaus includes the exhibition "TransTrans - Transatlantic Transgender Histories" as well as a diverse supporting program.
