The Ulsan in Munich: Typography Poster Exhibition presents works of Korea’s leading graphic designers, reinterpreting the prehistoric petroglyphs of Ulsan.
We are pleased to present 30 Korean posters, which grew out of the Ulsan Hangeul Hanmadang Arts Festival, in collaboration with GRANSHAN Foundation e.V.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Ulsan Bangudae Petroglyphs, we look back at the value and artistry of petroglyphs as a source of written communication, visualisation of culture and art, a prototype of characters and cultural heritage.
This exhibition was inspired by the basal communication system of petroglyphs and the artistic signs of mankind. The group of consciously invited artists had the opportunity to reinterpret their own conception of the historic site and then create a new poster design.
The exhibition aims to elevate the status of Ulsan worldwide by showcasing new experimental contemporary, cultural, and artistic works that collectively give communication design greater symbolic value and meaning.
The typography poster exhibition, now on display in Munich, was part of the 2021 Ulsan Hangeul Hanmadang Arts Festival, a civic arts festival in Ulsan, South Korea, that embraces the historical, traditional and literary values of Hangeul (Korean alphabet).
Leading Korean graphic designers participated to present their artworks in form of posters showing the various meanings of the typographic characters through the artist's own interpretation and experimental visualization of typographic culture.
