How can design help solve the problems our world is facing and which it has contributed to on large scale? Can design create a different, if not a better world?
Design is and always has been the great allure of a capitalism bent on permanent growth. Design scouts and sets trends, triggers fashions, generates ever new (purchase) incentives, feeds mass consumption - oftentimes with no regard for resource depletion.
The documentary "Design is never innocent" explores how present-day design practices respond to pressing issues such as eco-destruction and climate change. It features designers who, like at the International Design Biennale of Saint-Étienne, experiment with fully recyclable materials, research energy-efficient production methods in crossdisciplinary teams and self-founded labs, and ask critical questions regarding the designers' responsibility for what - and how - they produce.
